Giro Rift Bike Helmet

Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
The Giro Rift bike helmet is an ideal choice for riders who want cool comfort and rugged good looks without breaking the bank. The helmet is made using Giro's in-mold construction, which fuses the helmet's outer shell with an impact-absorbing EPS liner. Not only does this reinforce both layers, but the "exoskeleton" also allows Giro to engineer helmets that are lighter, more durable, and better ventilated. The helmet also employs Giro's patented Acu Dial fit system, which hugs the back of your head and reduces the tendency of your helmet to shift forwards or backwards. Unlike most system, the Acu Dial's design provides adjustable tension independent of the helmet straps. This means you don't have to overtighten the straps to enjoy a snug, comfortable fit. The bike's premium features conclude with a whopping 24 cooling events, keeping you well ventilated on both short and long rides.
About GiroWorking late nights in his garage, designer/bike racer Jim Gentes created the first lightweight adult cycling helmet in 1985. Friends at NASA helped tune the final helmet shape and vent placement, and the result was the Giro Prolight, a helmet that was better looking than traditional designs while offering a superior fit and still met the industry's toughest safety standards. Plus, it was half the weight of traditional helmets. Since then, Giro has advanced its helmets, many of which have set the standards for styling, function, and innovation for progressive, performance-oriented riders on dirt, pavement, and snow. Giro helmets are worn by millions of riders, cyclists, skiers, and snowboarders around the world. Young-bloods and old-timers; hard-cores, heshers, and hipsters; rookies, experts, and a few regular Joes too--in fact, pretty much anyone that appreciates superior fit and function, cutting edge styling, and the very best ideas you get in a helmet.

Thankfully, gone are the days of helmets being lame or un-cool. Perhaps it’s Darwinian, but people soon wised up to the idea of protecting their own intelligence. Nevertheless, we are vain creatures and no sensible cyclist wanted to look like a cotton swab. To that end, Giro gives us the Rift. Customer Reviews

Just starting biking instead of driving about 2 months ago, and needed a helmet that was comfortable, looked good, and was still affordable. After a bit of research, I learned that the better helmets were lighter, while still giving the same amount of protection. More openings in the helmet meant better air flow (so your head stays cool), lighter weight, but also a bit higher price tag.
After comparing a few helmets on Amazon in the $50 range, I decided on this one based on the look and what I perceived to be a good air flow. I've put over 300 miles on my bike so far, and I can honestly say it's easy to forget the helmet is even on. Having only worn toy-store quality hemets before, this was an incredible upgrade.
It's feather-light, and it rests on my head comfortably with an easy-to-use dial at the back for making it fit snugly. The straps looked a bit uncomfortable at first sight, but as soon as you snap the buckle together you forget they are there.
AND THE AIRFLOW! WOW I don't even know if that's the right word for it... but this helmet keeps my head very cool. I live in SoCal with 75-90 degree weather lately, but even with commutes as long as 20 miles, the wind rushes right through the helmet, across my head as I ride, and my head does not get hot and sweaty.
I don't know how they did it, but thank you Giro for this gift to bikers!

This helmet has great a great fit (even for my odd shaped head). I love the quick adjuster. The vents provide great air-flow to keep you cool while riding. I am a mountain biker. I'm preparing for my first triathlon. Luckily I have no idea how well this helmet performs in an impact situation because I haven't wrecked yet. Hopefully I will never have to write a review about how well this helmet performed when I wrecked (knock on wood).

I highly recommend this helmet (and brand)

Giro Atmos Road/Racing Bike Helmet

Product Description

The Giro Atmos Road and Racing helmet provides legendary performance, style and comfort - and features the new Roc Loc 5 fit system. After more than ten years of refinement, this ground-breaking fit system provides an entirely unique use experience with an unmatched level of comfort, stability, adjustability and weight savings. With Roc Loc 5, you can easily dial-in both fit tension and adjust vertical position with a single hand. Just twist the dial for a tighter feel on tough terrain, then back it off a notch and relax across the flats or a warm climb. Even with these remarkable features, Roc Loc 5 is still 40-percent lighter than its popular predecessor, Roc Loc 4. Roc Loc 5 systems is: 1) Micro Dial. The heart of the Roc Loc 5 is this ratcheting, micro-adjusting dial. A simple, two-finger twist of the Micro Dial opens or closes the retention system and each click is audible. 2) Three-Position Vertical Fit - It's never been easier to change vertical positions and fine-tune fit. We incorporated a three-position bracket that features 15-millimeters of precise up/down movement. Like the Micro Dial, this system can be adjusted without removing the helmet. 3) Carefully crafted ergonomic arms are shaped to be as comfortable as possible, yet work flawlessly with Giro eyewear (what we call Super Fit engineering). 4) Dual Pods - These two panels are designed to firmly grasp the back of your head while comfortably cradling the occipital lobe. Strap management - with Roc Loc 5, your helmet straps are woven through the fit system, so they are always in the perfect position. Complex Internal Design - Dozens of small parts work together seamlessly to provide exceptionally user-friendly adjustment. Minimal and Light, yet Strong - Although this fit system is 40% lighter than its predecessor, it's much stronger. In testing, Roc Loc 5 performs flawlessly, even after 6,600 cycles (equivalent to 3 years of riding with 3 round trips per day).

Customer Reviews

Let me start by saying that once you get to the $100+ helmets, you really can't go wrong with any of your choices for helmets
Before choosing to buy this helmet I spent days researching all the helmet offerings by Giro, Bell, Specialized, etc. They all promise many vents, comfort, low weight and great designs -- it is difficult to truly say one helmet is better than another in terms of features.
My next step in ensuring I was going to pick the correct helmet was to visit all the bicycle shops in my city and personally try them on, even trying the same model in different sizes to make sure I would get the perfect fit. I found that out of all the helmets, the Giro Atmos was the most comfortable surpassing the Bell Volt and more expensive offerings like the Ionos. At the store, I even thought this helmet was so comfortable, I would probably forget I even had a helmet on after a while.
So I went ahead and purchased and put it to the test immediately. After 300 miles, I can confidently provide my review.
The helmet is light, well constructed and extremely comfortable (for my head). The airflow is excellent and keeps my head cool even in the hot summer (we get very hot summers). I found that I am sweating a lot less as I'm no longer having to wipe sweat off my face. The wind freely courses through my hair, so much so, that I was correct in thinking I would forget I have a helmet on.
Not entirely sure its a con, but I the padding seems to be on the light side. It is still comfortable, beyond the fully padded helmets like the Volt. I have not crashed so I cannot provide how it performs in such a scenario, but I'm certain the Atmos would not be as big a seller if it fared poorly in this category. Construction is solid and the new tightening system with the dial is a great improvement over the previous system. The design and color schemes are excellent as well.
4/5 stars. still an expensive helmet.

Good fit - the Roc Loc fit system is nice - better than my last Giro helmet (about 5 yrs old). Ventilation is very good and it's pretty lightweight. A nice feature is the improved padding - it's not just glued foam and felt, it's actually sewn at the edges; so maybe it will last longer. The other type starts to separate after a while and needs to be replaced.

Customer Reviews

I bought this helmet last September. Excellent fit, very comfortable, light, and good ventilation. It's protection ability was tested yesterday when I hit a curb wrong and went flying - cracked the helmet ; recieved 16 stiches to my eye but no concusion or other head injury... which really surprised the emergency room doctor. I'm buying the exact same model today as my replacement.

You can tell the dramatic difference in the weight of this helmet versus a comparably priced Bell helmet. It's as light as they get, comfortable, and definitely keeps your head cool.
The big negative and the reason for 2 stars is the Y shaped adjustable connecter that connect the two straps on each side of the ear to form the single strap that connects under jaw.
Most Y connectors allow the straps to lay flat against your cheek, this one however forces a twist to the straps as they enter the connector, making the strap and connector rest at an angle on your cheek. Not only is this very uncomfortable, but I imagine very un-aerodynamic. My friend has a bigger round face (he's overweight) and it was very uncomfortable. I am in shape and still had the strap angle on my cheeks instead of resting flat, so just adjusted the Y connector under my jaw line so I didn't have to feel it. That worked fine for me and still felt secure and safe for an accident, but my friend could not adjust it that low given his facial structure. The only good thing about the Y connector is it flips open easily with a finger so you can adjust it up or down quickly without a mirror. However, the way it rests on your cheeks is unacceptable and should never have made it to the assembly line (imo).

The sleek, sculpted Giro Transfer bike helmet offers everything you need for commuting, touring, and cruising, and delivers a little more than you might expect. The Transfer is made using Giro's in-mold construction, which fuses a tough polycarbonate outer shell with the helmet's impact-absorbing EPA foam liner. Not only does this fusion process reinforce both layers, but the "exoskeleton" also allows Giro to engineer helmets that are lighter, more durable, and better ventilated. The helmet also employs Giro's patented Acu Dial fit system, which hugs the back of your head and reduces the tendency of your helmet to shift forwards or backwards. With a single-handed adjustment of the full-fit band, you can create a perfect fit regardless of your head shape or hair length (the helmet is even ponytail-compatible).
To keep you cool on the road, the Transfer comes with Giro's proprietary Wind Tunnel ventilation system, which combines 20 active vents with internal exhaust channels that thrust cool, fresh air over and around the rider's head while forcing heat and stale air out. The significant increase in air channeling makes a difference that riders will feel immediately.
The Transfer is a Universal Fit single-size helmet. Giro's Universal Fit family of helmets is sculpted to look good and fit great for most people on the first try. By developing unique shell sizes based on select customer groups and combining them with an adjustable-fit system, Universal Fit helmets make it easier for you to find the right fit, right out of the box, right away.

Good looking helmet, adds less bulk to my big head and avoids the 'mushroom' appearance my last helmet had. My big head measures 23.5" around and is of average proportions. This helmet just fits me at the largest adjustment. It's really quite perfect for me, but if you're any larger than 23.5", you will need a larger helmet. I had to only use one of the included adhesive pads to protect to crown of my head. I also shave my head, your hair will keep you from needing this.
I compared this to the other 4-letter brand in this price range at a local store. Overall build quality looks better than the other brand: better quality straps, the size adjustment system actually works without binding or loosening up, overall higher quality feel than the competition. Also, there is more styrofoam protecting the lower back of the head that the others. It's no BMX helmet, but I feel more protected than in the other brand.
As others have mentioned, the adjustment straps may cause discomfort near your cheek. I was able to adjust these flat, but you should try the helmet before buying it.
Whoever packaged this helmet was very ignorant. The shipping box was fine, but the manufacturer's box had a 2"x4" hole punched into it, and the foam on the back of the helmet was slightly damaged. Since I'll probably scratch it more on my own, I didn't return it, but this was also because the return shipping outweighs any discount Amazon provided me. Usually Amazon has satisfied, but it's inexcusable to send a damaged product. Just beware, if you want a 'brand new' helmet without a scratch, you may want to cough up the extra eight bux and pick it out at the store.

This cycling helmet is a great value for the cost. Lightweight and sturdy.good construction and design. Custom fit dial works very well and the ventilation is good.

Having owned many Giro helmets, and currently having a high end model, this is an excellent Giro for the price. The expensive models really give you huge vent openings, but this one is pretty good. The styling is excellent and the dial fit adjustment is comparable to the RocLoc system of the higher models. If you need a nice bike helmet at a good price, this is certainly a great choice.
However, make sure you measure your head! This is listed as a universal fit Womens model, which is a total joke. I bought this for my 3 year old daughter, who has a head that measures more than mid-way in the fit range, and it fits her great. On the other hand, my wife who wears a medium Giro Monza, a not-uncommon size for many women, could never fit into this helmet and it almost looks like she's trying to fit a kids helmet on her head. Obviously this will fit many women, but don't read "universal sizing" and order without measuring your head. The Skyla fit range is 50 to 57 cm. In comparison, a medium Giro helmet is 55-59cm (Roc-loc limits) because it also has a larger shell. By the way, the Giro Flume children's specific model has the same fit range of the Skyla of 50-57cm, and the Giro Rodeo toddler helmet is 50-55 cm.
When a Womens helmet has almost the same range as a toddler helmet, you know Giro is trying to limit the number of women who will fit into this helmet, forcing many to move up to the more expensive models that come in sizes; and there are some good reasons to buy the expensive models like fit, Roc-Loc system quick adjustability, and increased air flow.
But if your head fits, its a great helmet at a good budget-friendly price.

I bought this helment primarily because I needed something and it was inexpensive. I was really surprised that it fit so well and it is so sturdy. In fact it is so comfortable that I often forget I have it on. I highly recommend this helmet

Customer Reviews

This is a very comfortable helmet with a nice fit. Most of the helmets you'll find in this price range don't fit well. Believe me, I've tried a number of them. But this one fits me great.
One small piece of advice: It has a more rounded appearance from the front than most bike helmets do. So if you don't like the thought of a "round" look when someone's looking at you straight on, this might not be the helmet for you.

I really like this helmet. It's from a name brand company who has made many contributions to the innovation of bicycling helmets. It fits well - it has the "dial" fit system (every helmet company has their own name for it). It's easy to adjust, comfortable, comes with extra padding (I guess in case your head doesn't fit perfectly). It's one size fits all.
It didn't come with a visor and I do not see an option for one. I guess just get some sunglasses. The helmet is very compact and very light. Amazing value.
